Behind ASCENDK9

My name is Becky Burrell and I’m the founder and head trainer here at ASCENDK9, based in Harlow, Essex UK.

My journey began with a rescue dog named Kai, whose challenges pushed me to expand my own knowledge and understanding of dog training and behaviour.

Like many dog owners, I faced significant difficulties with Kai.

Poorly socialised, with no formal training, I was struggling to help him overcome his reactivity to other dogs and often felt we would never make progress.

Determined to learn more, I sought guidance from various professional trainers and spent my own time extensively researching and reviewing different approaches, building a strong understanding of canine behaviour and social cognition. Through these experiences, I gained invaluable insights into how dogs learn and the pivotal role that clear communication plays in successful training.

Driven by the desire to see other dog owners overcome similar hurdles, my goal is to empower you with the knowledge and tools to build a strong, positive relationship with your dog.

At ASCENDK9, I offer personalised training lessons tailored to meet the unique needs of each dog and owner. Whether you're dealing with behavioural issues, looking to refine obedience skills, or simply wanting to bond more closely with your dog, I’m here to support you every step of the way.

Beyond individual training, I’m committed to encouraging a collaborative community of dog lovers who share a passion for training and building a strong bond with their dogs.

Experience & Certifications

You don’t understand anything until you learn it more than one way.
— Marvin Minsky

From a young age I have always found spending time with animals hugely rewarding.

Growing up in a very rural area in East Sussex, I spent lots of my time during my childhood and teenage years helping and learning from family members who led local pet dog training classes, participated in Crufts and owned working gundogs.

My passion and interest for dog training and care has remained throughout my adult life and I’m a strong believer that continued education and experience is crucial in the dog training industry!

I’m a self confessed “geek” for all things dog training - with a special interest in the science and research behind our understanding of canine cognition and animal behaviour. Learning how our canine companions truly process information and being able to explain to my clients exactly why we choose to implement techniques or choose an approach in training is extremely important to me.

I regularly complete additional courses, attend workshops and join seminars as part of my continued professional development, and, because I truly enjoy it.

  • In January 2024 I successfully completed a Level 3 Diploma in Dog Training.

This course provided insight into how dogs learn, dog psychology, training theory, an overview of types of training, canine behaviour and body language and anxiety, fear and aggression in dogs.

  • In August 2024 I obtained the NePoPo® Online Silver certification.

NePoPo® is often referred to as 'The Language of Modern Dog Training' where the philosophy is behaviour that is 'Always on Cue with Heart & Soul'. We strive for a connection and effective communication.

  • I am a certified canine first aider. This was a certification I felt was crucial for not only the safety and well-being of dogs in my care, but for the peace of mind for owners training with ASCENDK9.

  • During 2023 I dedicated my free time to volunteering at a local dog rescue centre. This involved building trust with nervous, reactive dogs through positive reinforcement training, teaching the dogs how to walk calmly on lead and engaging with the dogs through cooperative play and fun training sessions.

I remain an active volunteer for a nationwide dog rescue charity to this day and attend owners homes in order to carry out behavioural assessments for dogs who require rehoming through the charity.

  • I regularly attend seminars, webinars and work closely with other dog trainers and industry professionals to ensure I am continuously learning and expanding my knowledge, skills and experience.
